What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Surgery

    Last updated 4 months ago

Breast augmentation surgery is a common plastic surgery procedure that enables women to have the enhanced breast size they want. If you are considering breast implants, be sure to thoroughly discuss all of your questions and concerns with a reputable cosmetic surgeon. While hundreds of thousands of women get breast implants every year, the procedure requires many decisions, such as whether you want saline or silicone implants, what size implant you desire, and where your incisions will be made. The following provides a more in-depth look at what will occur on the day of your surgery.

    Breast Incisions
Patients should be aware that all breast augmentation surgeries are performed under anesthesia to avoid any discomfort or anxiety. Once the patient is under the effects of general anesthesia, the cosmetic surgeon will make an incision to allow for the insertion of the breast implants. The incision may be made in several different locations, including under the armpit, around the areola, and in the breast fold.

    Breast Augmentation
After the incisions are made, the surgeon will augment the breasts’ size with the implants. Women who decide to have silicone implants will have the implants inserted fully inflated. Women who choose to have saline implants will typically have the implants inserted empty and then filled with saline solution. Both types of implants are generally placed either beneath the breast tissue or beneath the breast tissue and underlying muscles.

    Breast Suturing
Once the breast implants are inserted and properly positioned under each breast, the surgeon will stitch close and dress the incision sites. Some patients will receive dissolvable stitches, while others will get sutures that require removal in the weeks following surgery. To alleviate fluid buildup and discomfort, some women may also get temporary drains placed at the surgery site. Please note that breast augmentation surgery requires several weeks of postoperative recovery.

    The Breast Reduction Surgery Process

    Last updated 4 months ago

Women who wish to decrease their breast size for medical or cosmetic reasons can undergo breast reduction surgery. This video animation demonstrates what occurs during this plastic surgery procedure.

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, which means that the patient is unconscious. An incision is first made at or below the areola. The cosmetic surgeon will then proceed to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin from one or both of the breasts. To ensure a cosmetically appealing result, the surgeon may also reposition the nipple and areola. Once a desired size is reached, the surgeon will then suture close and dress the incisions.

Are you considering breast reduction surgery? If so, call Mesna Plastic Surgery at (612) 284-8672. Our cosmetic surgery practice offers a wide range of services, including breast reduction surgery, liposuction, and tummy tucks.
