Modern cosmetic surgery allows patients to have the curves that fit their personal preferences and needs. For many women, breast implants provide the perfect option for achieving a desired look. However, women should consider the following questions carefully when deciding to get breast implants, as the answers may affect their surgical decisions.
-
Do you want silicone or saline breast implants?
Silicone breast implants and saline breast implants both provide effective breast enhancement results, and each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. Both saline and silicone implants can provide a nice, natural appearance when used in sizes proportionate with the rest of the body. Silicone implants are supposed to provide a more natural feel than saline implants which can be the case in patients with little or no breast tissue. If a patient has some breast tissue to work with, both types of implants can have a similar feel. Since silicone gels can cause inflammatory reactions with breast tissue, the FDA recommends that patients with silicone implants should get MRI scans every other year (starting 3 years after their placement) to look for signs of leakage or adverse reactions. These scans are usually not covered by insurance. Since saline implants are filled with IV fluid (the same fluid that can go directly into your blood system in the hospital) they do not require MRI scans for montoring. The saline implants are usually filled once they are inside the body ant therefore require smaller incisions (and are consequently associated with smaller scars than their silicone counterparts).

Have you talked about your expectations with your surgeon?
Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, patients should thoroughly discuss their goals and expectations with their surgeon so that they understand what changes they can expect. A plastic surgeon should be able to answer any questions you have related to the procedure, costs, recovery, and the anticipated results. Prior to cosmetic surgery, each patient should understand in detail how her breast implants will look and feel.
-
Can you follow post-surgery instructions?
Breast enhancement surgery is an extremely safe and commonly performed procedure. However, patients should expect to undergo at least a few days, if not a few weeks, of recovery. This often entails taking time off from work, abstaining from strenuous physical activity, and experiencing some discomfort. Take care to make the needed schedule arrangements before getting breast implants to allow for a relaxed and stress-free recovery period.

The idea that women want to increase their cup sizes tends to get the most press, but being unpleased with your breasts because they are too large is also a common and potentially serious issue. Many women turn to plastic surgeons for breast reduction surgery for both cosmetic enhancement and pain relief. Could a breast reduction be right for you? Consider these signs which indicate that you should consult a cosmetic surgeon about this procedure:
-
You Are in Pain from the Weight of Your Breasts
Pain is the most common reason why women consider getting a breast reduction. Disproportionately large breasts can cause pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. Large breasts add a significant amount of weight to a woman’s chest that can be painful to support. Women with large breasts often have to cope with bra straps that dig into their skin and may slouch due to the excess weight, which causes muscle strains. If your breasts are causing muscle fatigue or back pain, a breast reduction may be a life-changing procedure for you.
-
You Experience an Emotional Toll from Having Large Breasts
Having disproportionately large breasts can impact your self-esteem. Young women in particular may become the targets of bullying and harassment by their peers. If your breast size is bringing you down emotionally, this surgery may help restore your self-confidence.
-
You Face Lifestyle Issues due to Your Breast Size
Disproportionally large breasts can interfere with life in a number of ways. Exercising is challenging, because sports bras often do not provide adequate support. Rashes under the breasts which are caused by friction, heat, and moisture are also common. Finding clothes that fit properly is another concern, especially if your breasts are out of proportion with your frame. Breast reduction surgery can help you deal with all of these issues.
For help in deciding if breast reduction is right for you, contact Mesna Plastic Surgery today. You will be evaluated by a board certified plastic surgeon to determine if you’re a good candidate for this plastic surgery procedure. Call (612) 284-8672 now to schedule your consultation.

If your tummy isn’t looking as tight and flat as it used to and diet and exercise aren’t working, you still have options to regain your shape. Plastic surgery procedures like abdominoplasty and liposuction can help you lose your excess fat and reclaim your svelte physique. Both of these procedures can be used to target unshapely abdomens, so you may be wondering which one is the right cosmetic surgery for you. Here’s what you need to know about each procedure so you can make an informed decision.
An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, targets both the skin and muscles of your abdomen. Weight gain and pregnancy can stretch your abdominal skin and muscles so much that they cannot return to their original condition, even after any excess weight is lost. Aging can have the same effect. As the skin loses elasticity and muscles lose firmness, your stomach may appear less toned than you would like.
During an abdominoplasty, your plastic surgeon will tighten your abdominal wall and remove the excess skin around your abdomen. Small deposits of fat may also be removed. The result is a flatter stomach that should stay tight, as long you maintain good diet and exercise habits.
With liposuction, excess fat cells can be removed from all over the body. With proper maintenance through healthy lifestyle choices, the effects of liposuction are long lasting. The procedure is usually completed in a single outpatient treatment with little recovery time.

Which is the Right Option?
Liposuction only targets fat cells and cannot do anything to address stretched skin and stomach muscles. If you only have stubborn fat deposits, then liposuction may be the right option. However, if your stomach muscles and skin are stretched because of pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or aging, you may require a tummy tuck. For many patients, tummy tucks and liposuction are often combined for the best results. . In order to determine which is right for you, it is necessary to consult a plastic surgeon.
Let the experts at Mesna Plastic Surgery help you decide which of these procedures will give you the best results. We perform liposuction and tummy tucks, as well as breast augmentations, rhinoplasty, brow lifts, and more. Contact us at (612) 284-8672 to schedule a cosmetic surgery consultation.
