Having children may be one of the greatest gifts of life however for many women, the process takes a toll on the body that simply cannot be reversed with diet and exercise alone. For those women, a mommy makeover can be a wonderful solution. This group of procedures in plastic surgery helps mothers restore their bodies to more closely resemble how they looked and felt prior to pregnancy and helps restore their self-confidence and body image. Several procedures are often combined to accomplish the makeover and often include breast augmentation, breast lifts, liposuction, and tummy tuck procedures.
After childbirth, the breasts are one of the most greatly affected parts of a woman’s body. Hormonal changes and breastfeeding can cause changes in the size and shape of the breasts. After pregnancy, many women experience a significant loss of volume coupled with unwanted sagging. This is often worse after multiple pregnancies. Plastic surgery offers the opportunity for women to restore their breasts to their pre-pregnancy size and shape. Breast implant procedures restore the size of the breasts and create volume with natural looking results. Breast lifts are used to combat sagging by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple to a higher and more youthful position. During a mommy makeover, many women combine a breast augmentation with a breast lift to restore the size and shape of their breasts.
During pregnancy, abdominal skin and muscles can get stretched beyond what they can recover from. After giving birth, many women are left with a roll of excess skin and loose muscles that no matter how much they diet and exercise, they cannot get it to recover. Tummy tucks can tighten the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat (and in some instances even tighten the muscles) to improve the contours and integrity of the abdominal wall. Frequently, this treatment is used in combination with liposuction to also improve the contours of the areas around the stomach like the waist, hips, thighs, back, buttocks, arms, and chin areas.

When considering breast augmentation, women can choose silicone or saline implants. As this video demonstrates, each type of breast implant has its own advantages.
Both silicone and saline breast implants have an outer solid-phase silicone shell. Saline implants are filled with a saline solution after insertion, while silicone implants contain a cohesive silicone gel. Many cosmetic surgery patients feel that this silicone gel offers a more natural feel than saline. However, because silicone breast implants are inserted at full size, they require a larger incision than saline implants. Silicone implants also require MRI scans to watch for leakage or signs of inflammationand those tests are usually not covered by insurance.

Diet and physical activity can play a significant role in decreasing body fat. However, it sometimes just isn’t enough. No matter how healthy your diet is and how regularly you exercise, you still may have problems with stubborn body fat in certain areas. Fortunately, there are treatments available for these areas, too. While liposuction continues to be the gold standard for fat removal, CoolSculpting® is a less invasive option for more localized fat reduction. The procedure is safe, non-invasive, does not require anesthesia and allows patients to return to work right after the procedure is performed.
Medical researchers have found that when fat cells freeze they break down and become eliminated by the body. It’s this principle that CoolSculpting® utilizes to remove fat deposits. Using an FDA-approved process, a cooling device is placed directly over the target area of fat to be treated. The skin and fat are suctioned into the device which then freezes the fat cells. It does not harm the surrounding tissues or body structures. Patients can have peace of mind knowing that CoolSculpting® does not adversely affect healthy muscles, blood vessels, and nerves.
Once the fat cells freeze and die, the body reabsorbs them. The result is a reduction of fat in the treated area. After just one 60-minute treatment session, CoolSculpting® patients can experience a 20 to 25 percent decrease of fat in the targeted regions.
Many patients have enjoyed the benefits of CoolSculpting® and have used it all over their bodies. The procedure is safe, effective, quick, and requires no anesthesia. Patients can even have CoolSculpting® done on their lunch break or while running errands and can even continue working during the procedure. Unlike liposuction where the fat is removed immediately, it can take the body several months to remove the fat after CoolSculpting. Also, liposuction can remove more fat in more areas than Coolsculpting so the results after CoolSculpting are usually not as dramatic as after liposuction. None the less, CoolSculpting appears to be a good procedure for treating more limited amounts of fat in more focal areas and does not require any anesthesia or down time.
If you want to find out more about CoolSculpting®, contact Mesna Plastic Surgery today. We offer not only CoolSculpting® treatment, but also a wide range of other cosmetic procedures, including liposuction, breast implants, tummy tucks, Botox®, fillers, and laser treatments. Modern cosmetic surgery allows patients to have the curves that fit their personal preferences and needs. For many women, breast implants provide the perfect option for achieving a desired look. However, women should consider the following questions carefully when deciding to get breast implants, as the answers may affect their surgical decisions.
Do you want silicone or saline breast implants?
Silicone breast implants and saline breast implants both provide effective breast enhancement results, and each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. Both saline and silicone implants can provide a nice, natural appearance when used in sizes proportionate with the rest of the body. Silicone implants are supposed to provide a more natural feel than saline implants which can be the case in patients with little or no breast tissue. If a patient has some breast tissue to work with, both types of implants can have a similar feel. Since silicone gels can cause inflammatory reactions with breast tissue, the FDA recommends that patients with silicone implants should get MRI scans every other year (starting 3 years after their placement) to look for signs of leakage or adverse reactions. These scans are usually not covered by insurance. Since saline implants are filled with IV fluid (the same fluid that can go directly into your blood system in the hospital) they do not require MRI scans for montoring. The saline implants are usually filled once they are inside the body ant therefore require smaller incisions (and are consequently associated with smaller scars than their silicone counterparts).
Have you talked about your expectations with your surgeon?
Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, patients should thoroughly discuss their goals and expectations with their surgeon so that they understand what changes they can expect. A plastic surgeon should be able to answer any questions you have related to the procedure, costs, recovery, and the anticipated results. Prior to cosmetic surgery, each patient should understand in detail how her breast implants will look and feel.
Can you follow post-surgery instructions?
Breast enhancement surgery is an extremely safe and commonly performed procedure. However, patients should expect to undergo at least a few days, if not a few weeks, of recovery. This often entails taking time off from work, abstaining from strenuous physical activity, and experiencing some discomfort. Take care to make the needed schedule arrangements before getting breast implants to allow for a relaxed and stress-free recovery period.
